Fairest # 4 - Bill Willingham & Phil Jimenez

Half a decade ago, I decided to buy the first 3 issues of Fairest. And I don’t regret that decision, the only regret is that I didn’t get the rest of the series. A Fables spinoff, Fairest gave Bill Willingham enough freedom to play with characters that were already familiar to the readers, in settings and situations that could not be fully explored in the main Vertigo ongoing series.

“Man on a Ledge” (published in Fairest #4, August 2012) is the fourth chapter of “Wide Awake”, a saga that reunites characters such as Red Rose, Snow Queen and Ali Baba. As we can see in “Prince of Thieves”, “Run” and “Party Crasher”, Willingham delves deep into the past of these characters, and now he sheds some new light on Ali Baba.

What’s the secret origin of the Prince of Thieves? Willingham shares with us the story of a man who had everything: lands, gold, women, etc., and maybe because he had everything he felt as if he had nothing. So in order to feel alive again “Ali Baba turned to thieving […] he had a natural gift for it”. But even though he is a resourceful man, this time Ali Baba might not be able to escape from the Snow Queen’s icy dungeons.

Once again Phil Jimenez does a magnificent job as a penciler. A master of composition, Jimenez is capable of conveying tension and dramatism in the confrontation between Ali Baba and Snow Queen. 

The double page spreads are also quite striking, Jimenez chooses a vertical approach to recount the misfortunes of the Snow Queen and a big, sweeping panoramic view of Snow Queen’s successful role as the leader of an army of trolls and other creatures.

As usual, inkers Andy Lanning and Andrew Pepoy wonderfully complement Jimenez’s pencils. This is the first issue of the series in which we have a guest penciler: Steve Sadowski provides us with a couple of very good pages, that seamlessly blend in with the rest. And at last, but certainly not least, Adam Hughes comes up with an impressive cover, in which a certain erotic element seems to redefine the reader’s expectations.

Hace media década, decidí comprar los primeros 3 números de Fairest. Y no me arrepiento de esa decisión, de lo único de lo que me arrepiento es no haber adquirido el resto de la colección. Fairest salió de las páginas de Fables y le dio a Bill Willingham suficiente libertad para jugar con personajes que ya eran familiares para los lectores, en entornos y situaciones que no podían ser del todo exploradas en la serie principal de Vertigo.

The secret origin of the Prince of Thieves / El origen secreto del Príncipe de los ladrones

"Hombre al filo" (publicado en Fairest # 4, agosto de 2012) es el cuarto capítulo de "Del todo despiertos", una saga que reúne personajes como Red Rose, Snow Queen y Ali Baba. Como podemos ver en “Prince of Thieves”, “Run” y “Party Crasher”, Willingham profundiza en el pasado de estos personajes, y ahora arroja nueva luz sobre Ali Baba.

¿Cuál es el origen secreto del Príncipe de los Ladrones? Willingham comparte con nosotros la historia de un hombre que lo tenía todo: tierras, oro, mujeres, etc., y tal vez porque lo tenía todo se sentía como si no tuviera nada. Así que para sentirse vivo de nuevo "Ali Baba se volvió ladrón [...] él tenía un don natural para ello". Pero aunque es un hombre ingenioso, esta vez Ali Baba podría no ser capaz de escapar de las mazmorras heladas de la Reina de las Nieves.

Una vez más, Phil Jimenez hace un magnífico trabajo como dibujante. Un maestro de la composición, Jimenez es capaz de transmitir tensión y dramatismo en la confrontación entre Ali Baba y Snow Queen.

Las páginas dobles son también espectaculares. Jimenez escoge un enfoque vertical para contar las desgracias de la Reina de la Nieve y una gran y unaa vista panorámica del exitoso desempeño de Snow Queen como líder de un ejército de trolls y otras criaturas.

Como de costumbre, los entintadores Andy Lanning y Andrew Pepoy complementan maravillosamente los lápices de Jimenez. Este es el primer número de la serie en el que tenemos un dibujante invitado: Steve Sadowski nos proporciona un par de páginas muy buenas, que combinan sin problemas con las demás. Y por último, pero ciertamente no menos importante, Adam Hughes nos presenta una portada impresionante, en la que un cierto elemento erótico parece redefinir las expectativas del lector.

July comics / cómics de julio

Although I had already read it, I was glad to receive the Martha Washington tpb, a classic Frank Miller / Dave Gibbons story. I’m really enjoying Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and Shaolin Cowboy (Geof Darrow is truly amazing). Cinema Purgatorio continues to be a great anthology. And Batman ’66 Meets the Legion of Super-Heroes was very entertaining. There were also some really good first issues in July, such as Astonishing X-Men and especially Generation Gone (my favorite comic of the month). And now, without further ado, here are July comics as per solicitations:

Aunque ya lo había leído, me gustó recibir el tomo de Martha Washington, una historia clásica de Frank Miller / Dave Gibbons. Realmente estoy disfrutando American Gods de Neil Gaiman y Shaolin Cowboy (Geof Darrow es realmente asombroso). Cinema Purgatorio continúa siendo una gran antología. Y Batman ’66 Meets the Legion of Super-Heroes fue muy entretenido. July Films / películas de julio

In July I went again to Marcus Theaters (with a student ID, tickets are half off price on Thursdays, so that’s a good deal!) with my friends and we saw Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). Director Jon Watts does a pretty solid job (re)introducing to the audience a much younger Spider-Man than usual. The new Peter Parker is wonderfully played by Tom Holland, a young actor who had already impressed me in How I Live Now. Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as Iron Man. And this time the villain is the Vulture, played by Michael Keaton (Birdman). This Hollywood blockbuster has a great casting, some fun moments and doesn’t feel like a reboot (which is a good thing), however it lacks the charm of Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man.

Equals (2015) is an intense and yet subtle take on human nature and societal repression. Director Drake Doremus has created a cold and lifeless future in which people no longer have physical contact with each other, and in which all newborns go through a genetical process that prevents them from having strong emotions and feelings. One day Nicholas Hoult (Young Ones) starts feeling attracted to Kristen Stewart (Café Society), and therefore he’s no longer considered a productive member of this emotionless society. He’s subsequently forced to undergo a treatment that will erase his feelings, but instead of obeying the young couple decide to escape. Doremus film is visually arresting, heartbreaking and at the same time thought-provoking. I really recommend it.

En julio fui a Marcus Theaters (con el carnet de estudiante, los boletos están a mitad de precio los jueves, así que vale la pena) con mis amigos y vimos Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). El director Jon Watts hace un trabajo bastante sólido (re)creando un Spider-Man mucho más joven que de costumbre. El nuevo Peter Parker es maravillosamente interpretado por Tom Holland, un joven actor que ya me había impresionado en “How I Live Now”. Robert Downey Jr. repite su papel como Iron Man. Y esta vez el villano es el Buitre, interpretado por Michael Keaton (Birdman). Este éxito de Hollywood tiene un gran elenco, algunos momentos divertidos y no hace borrón y cuenta nueva (y eso es algo positivo), sin embargo, carece del encanto de The Amazing Spider-Man.

Equals (2015) es un estudio intenso y sutil de la naturaleza humana y la represión social. El director Drake Doremus ha creado un futuro frío y sin vida en el que las personas ya no tienen contacto físico entre sí, y en la que todos los recién nacidos pasan por un proceso genético que les impide desarrollar emociones y sentimientos fuertes. Un día Nicholas Hoult (Young Ones) comienza a sentirse atraído por Kristen Stewart (Café Society), y por lo tanto ya no es considerado un miembro productivo de esta sociedad sin emociones. Posteriormente es obligado a someterse a un tratamiento que borrará sus sentimientos, pero en lugar de obedecer, la joven pareja decide escapar. La película de Doremus es visualmente atractiva, desgarradora y, al mismo tiempo, cautivadora. La recomiendo.

Planetary # 18 - Warren Ellis & John Cassaday

When Jules Verne wrote “From the Earth to the Moon” in the late 19th century, he was inadvertently promoting the incipient genre of science-fiction. The concept of men traveling to the moon was still fresh and brand new, and in the hands of Verne this idea was convincing, solid and, above all, bursting with verisimilitude.

Many decades before NASA existed, Verne was already concocting theories, calculating trajectories, and proposing some unorthodox but rather charming ways of transporting a group of people outside our planet. For the French novelist, the solution was as simple as it was symbolic (a nod to America’s love for guns): the construction of a large cannon able to shoot a especially designed bullet. Inside this bullet, there were 3 men, ready to step foot on the moon for the first time in mankind’s history.

Using all the science and imagination at his disposal, Verne sent those 3 men to the moon. Supported by his own enthusiasm and his unbreakable faith on human resourcefulness, in Verne’s mind there were no doubts about the happy outcome of such endeavor. For Warren Ellis, however, there are many questions that remain in the air. Perhaps influenced by British skepticism or simply by his own devotion towards 19th century literature, Ellis focuses on the final fate of the Gun Club.

“The Gun Club” (published in Planetary # 18, February 2004) begins with Elijah Snow interrogating John Stone, the world’s best spy and a living tribute to the Cold War and the “Cold World”. As the leader of the Archeologists of the Impossible, Snow understands the importance of finding out what happened with the lost vessel of the Gun Club, which represents not only man’s first foray into space, but also the ingenuity of a group of adventurers in an era that lacked the necessary technology for such ambitious pursuits.

John Stone & Elijah Snow

Subtly, Ellis plays with the narrative possibilities of actually finding the launching site of the Gun Club. Of course, artist John Cassaday plays a crucial role in reconstructing this scenario, mixing in equal amounts a certain melancholy as well as a sense of decay and desolation. As Elijah Snow and his team of archeologists admire the abandoned construction of the world’s largest cannon, they soon find the bullet. It has reentered Earth’s atmosphere after a century and a half of drifting around the moon.  

Using her super-strength, Jakita Wagner opens the bullet-shaped rocket. And in an impressive splash page, Cassaday depicts the tragic end of the journey from the Earth to the moon. Crushed by the projectile’s acceleration, these 3 men had died seconds after the beginning of the journey. They were doomed to die for lack of oxygen, anyway. In Verne’s time, instead of vacuum of space people would talk about the aether, and in the novel these men had found a way to distill oxygen from the aether, which would have been absolutely useless since there is no such thing as aether surrounding planets. Furthermore, the inadequate design of the vessel and the extreme temperatures were also enough to cause the immediate death of the crew.

As Snow and Wagner walk around the remains of the launching site they reconcile the facts with the painful realization that, in 1851, these 3 men left behind their wives and their children to go to the moon, and they didn’t return until 150 years later. In the final page, Snow discovers that their families had been visiting the launching site for years, staring silently at the skies, waiting in vain for those lost explorers.

Cuando Jules Verne escribió “De la Tierra a la Luna” a fines del siglo XIX, auspició inadvertidamente el incipiente género de la ciencia ficción. El concepto del hombre que viajaba a la luna era todavía fresco y nuevo, y en las manos de Verne esta idea era convincente, sólida y, sobre todo, estaba llena de verosimilitud.

The end of the journey / el final del viaje

Muchas décadas antes de que la NASA existiera, Verne ya estaba inventando teorías, calculando trayectorias, y proponiendo algunas formas poco ortodoxas pero bastante encantadoras para transportar a un grupo de personas fuera de nuestro planeta. Para el novelista francés, la solución era tan simple como simbólica (un guiño al amor de Estados Unidos por las armas): la construcción de un gran cañón capaz de disparar una bala especialmente diseñada. Dentro de esta bala, había 3 hombres, listos para pisar la Luna por primera vez en la historia de la humanidad.

Usando toda la ciencia e imaginación a su disposición, Verne envió a esos 3 hombres a la luna. Apoyado por su propio entusiasmo y su fe inquebrantable en el ingenio humano, en la mente de Verne no había dudas sobre el feliz resultado de semejante esfuerzo. Para Warren Ellis, sin embargo, hay muchas preguntas que permanecen en el aire. Quizás influenciado por el escepticismo británico o simplemente por su propia devoción hacia la literatura del siglo XIX, Ellis se centra en el destino final del Club de la Pistola.

“El Club de la Pistola” (publicado en Planetary # 18, febrero del 2004) comienza con Elijah Snow interrogando a John Stone, el mejor espía del mundo y un tributo viviente a la Guerra Fría y al “Mundo Frío”. Como líder de los Arqueólogos de lo Imposible, Snow comprende la importancia de descubrir lo que sucedió con el bajel perdido del Club de la Pistola, que representa no sólo la primera incursión del hombre al espacio, sino también el ingenio de un grupo de aventureros en una época en la que carecían de la tecnología necesaria para tan ambiciosas actividades.

Sutilmente, Ellis juega con las posibilidades narrativas del hallazgo del sitio de lanzamiento del Club de la Pistola. Por supuesto, el artista John Cassaday juega un papel crucial en la reconstrucción de este escenario, mezclando en cantidades iguales cierta melancolía, así como una sensación de decadencia y desolación. Mientras Elijah Snow y su equipo de arqueólogos admiran la construcción abandonada del cañón más grande del mundo, encuentran la bala. Ha vuelto a entrar en la atmósfera de la Tierra después de un siglo y medio de estar a la deriva alrededor de la luna.

En la época de Verne, en vez del vacío del espacio, la gente hablaba del éter, y en la novela estos hombres habían encontrado una manera de destilar oxígeno del éter, lo cual hubiera sido absolutamente inútil, ya que los planetas no están rodeados de éter. Además, el diseño inadecuado del vehículo y las temperaturas extremas también eran suficientes para causar la muerte inmediata de la tripulación.

Mientras Snow y Wagner caminan alrededor de los restos del sitio de lanzamiento reconcilian los hechos con la dolorosa constatación de que en 1851 estos 3 hombres dejaron atrás a sus esposas y a sus hijos para ir a la luna y no regresaron hasta 150 años más tarde. En la última página, Snow descubre que sus familias habían estado visitando el sitio de lanzamiento durante años, mirando en silencio los cielos, esperando en vano a los exploradores perdidos.

June Comics / cómics de junio

I received some really impressive comics last month, such as Cinema Purgatorio, American Gods, Silver Surfer and Shaolin Cowboy. And I must admit I was surprised by the new comic book titles that came out in June, like Marvel’s Defenders and especially Diablo House (by the extraordinary Spanish artist Santiperez). However, my favorite new series and also the best issue of the month is Sacred Creatures, by Raimondi and Janson; captivating script and amazing art. And now, without further ado, here are June comics as per solicitations:

Recibí algunos cómics realmente impresionantes el mes pasado, tales como Cinema Purgatorio, American Gods, Silver Surfer y Shaolin Cowboy. Y debo admitir que me sorprendieron las nuevas colecciones que salieron en junio, como Defenders de Marvel y especialmente Diablo House (del extraordinario artista español Santiperez). Sin embargo, mi nuevo título favorito y también el mejor cómic del mes es Sacred Creatures, de Raimondi y Janson; guión cautivador y asombroso arte. Y ahora, sin más preámbulos, ahí van los cómics de junio:

AMERICAN GODS: SHADOWS #4
