June comic books / Cómics de junio

June was my last month in Milwaukee. And since I had a lot of free time I was able to read all of my comics faster than usual. I was quite satisfied with the conclusion of The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson; American Gods continues to be a tremendously good series; and I really enjoyed the first issues of Thor, Proxima Centauri (although it was maybe too experimental for me) and especially The Magic Order. My favorite issue of the month was Walk Through Hell #2, terrifying and powerful, something only Garth Ennis could’ve written! And now without further ado here are May comics as per solicitations:

AMERICAN GODS: MY AINSEL #4
(W) Neil Gaiman, P. Craig Russell (A) P. Craig Russell (CA) Glenn Fabry. Wednesday takes Shadow to San Francisco to sway the goddess Easter to join their forces in the upcoming, devastating god war! The Hugo, Bram Stoker, Locus, World Fantasy, and Nebula award-winning novel and hit Starz television series by Neil Gaiman is adapted as a comic series!

ASTONISHING X-MEN #12
(W) Charles Soule (A/CA) Aco. THE FINAL SHOWDOWN FOR…A MAN CALLED X! • It's XAVIER and PSYLOCKE versus PROTEUS! • In a battle for reality itself, which of these super-powered psychics will win? • And when the dust settles, what's next for the Astonishing X-men? Rated T+

FURTHER ADVENTURES OF NICK WILSON #5
(W) Eddie Gorodetsky, Marc Andreyko (A) Steve Sadowski (CA) Pete Woods. MINISERIES FINALE! The big day is finally here: the grand opening of the Nick Wilson Experience! But where is Nick? Will Clive get his greatest victory? Will Jane find love? Will Nick find Coco? Will Xavier knock that smug grin off Darryl's face? So many questions! ALL, and more, are answered in the final issue of this acclaimed miniseries!

HIT-GIRL #4
(W) Mark Millar (A) Ricardo Lopez Ortiz (CA) Amy Reeder. IT'S THE COLOMBIAN SHOWDOWN. In the bloody climax to her Colombian adventure, Hit-Girl makes her last stand against Palmira's gang lords. She's enslaved Mano as a sidekick, but will he finally crack and turn weapons on his own people? HIT-GIRL #4 is an action-packed gorefest - the bloodbath before Mindy sets off to her next destination.

HIT-GIRL #5
(W) Jeff Lemire (A) Eduardo Risso (CA) Karl Kerschl. Leaving behind her Colombian bloodbath, Mindy is locked, loaded, and ready to seriously mess up some Canadians. JEFF LEMIRE and EDUARDO RISSO take on MARK MILLAR's psychotic 12-year-old Hit-Girl for the next stop in her blood-soaked world tour. No amount of ice or snow will prevent Mindy from slaughtering her latest enemies. Variant covers from awesome Canadian artist KARL KERSCHL and a KICK-ASS #5 connecting cover from ÖZGÜR YILDIRIM.

JEEPERS CREEPERS #2
(W) Marc Andrekyo (A) Kewber Baal (CA) Kelley Jones. As Devon dives into his research on the mythical 'Creeper', he has no idea how long this evil has existed! Will he uncover the true history of the seemingly immortal monster before the Creeper finds him? Plus: The Aztec Empire!?!?

KICK-ASS #5
(W) Mark Millar (A/CA) John Romita. Patience is sucked deeper into the criminal underworld. Faced with a new horde of enemies, she must fight to keep her superhero activity and her identity safe. But what happens when the bad guys work out who's wearing the mask? The violence cuts way too close to home in the latest installment of MARK MILLAR and JOHN ROMITA JR.'s incredible KICK-ASS series, with a connecting HIT-GIRL #5 cover from ÖZGÜR YILDIRIM.

MAGIC ORDER #1
(W) Mark Millar (A/CA) Olivier Coipel. We live in a world where we've never seen a monster, and The Magic Order is the reason we sleep safely in our beds. Magic meets the mob in THE MAGIC ORDER, as five families of magicians-sworn to protect our world for generations-must battle an enemy who's picking them off one by one. By day, they live among us as our neighbors, friends, and co-workers, but by night, they are the sorcerers, magicians, and wizards that protect us from the forces of darkness…unless the darkness gets them first. MARK MILLAR's first NETFLIX comic book, drawn by the incredible OLIVIER COIPEL (Amazing Spider-Man, Thor).

MARVEL-TWO-IN-ONE #6

JEEPERS CREEPERS #2

The annotated Miracleman

Miracleman #3

Over 2 years ago I begun an ambitious task: to review Alan Moore's Miracleman.

I decided to do it without worrying about actually having the complete collection.

I only bought the first issues and I reviewed them.

But I loved them so much that I couldn't stop, and the problem is that each issue was considerably more expensive than the previous one.

I stopped at issue #5, hating the economy and my very limited budget.

Today I'm a happier guy because Marvel is reprinting Miracleman and I can afford the new price: 4.99 per issue.

So instead of rewriting my reviews I have decided to share with you the new pages (which have been recolored and restored) and include a link to my old reviews. That way you get the best of both worlds. So Enjoy!

Miracleman #3

May comic books / cómics de mayo

I love good gifts and I love good comics, and Free Comic Book Day is the perfect combination of all of that. Each year I eagerly await the arrival of May comics and the first thing I read are FCBD titles. The 48 page 2000AD FCBD was awesome, “full of thrills” as the English say. And IDW’s reprints of old Judge Dredd stories were delightful. I was also surprised by the high level of quality (story and art wise) of the two Prince Valiant tales selected by Fantagraphics. After a two years hiatus I picked up again a Marvel FCBD (due to the online speculation that suggested that this had something to do with Marvelman / Miracleman) but I wasn’t particularly impressed by it.

My two favorite comics of the month are Jupiter’s Legacy and Young Avengers, which I’ll be reviewing promptly. FF continues to be a great Marvel series, and The Unwritten managed to surprise me again. This month the eccentric Witch Doctor Mal Practice comes to an end, and the promising Suicide Risk begins (proving, once again, that Mike Carey really knows how to capture the reader’s attention). Thanks to Amazon and MidtownComics offers I got a bundle of trade paperbacks and hardcovers that I’m still reading, but they all look amazing. So, without further ado, here are May comics as per solicitations:
