Think Tank # 1 - Matt Hawkins & Rahsan Ekedal

Have you ever wondered what the US Military could be inventing right now? We all know that technology keeps evolving, and that guns are not the same now as they used to be half a century ago. In “Think Tank”, writer Matt Hawkins delves into the fascinating world of the weapons of tomorrow… or rather, into a military facility in which a group of scientists work 24/7 to create the most technologically advanced devises to be used in the battlefield by American Soldiers.

New energy sources, war drones, miniaturized weapons, remote control bullets with facial recognition softwares, etc. Want to know what the scariest part is? This isn’t fiction. It’s real. Matt has visited DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) and RAND (Research and Development) and although most military projects are secret there are a few that are out there for the public to see. Matt has “seen only the declassified stuff, but even that is fascinating. Just walking into one of these you feel like you’re stepping into the future”. You are all free to Google DARPA to see what you come up with; you’ll be surprised I assure you.

In this first chapter of Think Tank we get to know David Loren PhD, a brilliant inventor who is on the verge of a major scientific breakthrough. The only problem, though, is that he’s starting to feel guilty. After all, his inventions can and will be used for military purposes. Indirectly, he will be responsible for the death of thousands of people. I think Matt does a great job in his first issue, introducing the protagonist and the main cast, as well as giving us a glimpse into this scary world of the weapons of tomorrow.

The artist, Rahsan Ekedal, gained my admiration in Echoes, another Top Cow / Minotaur miniseries. So it’s great to see him once again, in glorious black and white. With a style slightly different from Echoes, Rahsan shows all his talent with vibrant action scenes and imaginative characters design. I’m thankful to Rich Johnston for recommending Think Tank over four months ago in his site Bleeding Cool, otherwise I probably would have missed it. In my opinion, Think Tank is August’s best new series. Check it out and see for yourself!
