Antoine and Quentin are twin brothers. They're both young, determined and stubborn. Planning to assist to their mother's funeral, they embark on a journey to Spain. Hitchhiking, walking, illegally breaking their way into cargo trains, their trip becomes longer and harder than expected.

Antoine, however, manages to find some pleasure thanks to the girls he finds on the road. Sexual intercourse seems to be Antoine's privilege, as Quentin remains isolated and totally immersed in his drawings. Even so, the twin brothers seem to share a special bond. Closeness and intimacy, at first, seem to come natural to them.

They almost embody the idealized brotherly relationship as seen in Sophocles Antigone. Antoine and Quentin are 'autadelphos' to the extreme, not only have they shared the mother's womb but they also share every physical trait, identical to one another in physical appearance they are completely different in everything else. According to Saussure's linguistics, these brothers would only be able to articulate themselves into the symbolic order by functioning as mutually supplementary properties. Here the signifier (the body) is the same, but the signified (the personality) is completely different.

The hardships of the excursion take a toll on the brother's already strained relationship. But even after constant fighting, they agree on working in a farm the necessary days to pay for a train ticket to Spain. One night, Quentin finds in the fields a young man that looks very interested in him. They go skinny dipping and afterwards they have sex in the middle of the woods. Antoine, worried about his brother's absence goes out looking for him and finds him naked with the other boy.

With a mindset conquered by the heterosexual normativity, Antoine is unable to cope with the fact that his brother is homosexual. In the classic Greek tragedy, Antigone confirms that she loves her brother despise he was a traitor to Thebes, she reaffirms "My brother is what he is", and she loves him even more than life itself. He is what he is. And she accepts him for it. Antoine, however, cannot accept homosexuality, he can't see his brother as he is. And so, a few hours after the fateful encounter, he betrays his brother.

While eating in town, a man approaches Antoine, trying to seduce him. He quickly tells the man that for 100 euros he can have his brother, who is already waiting in the bathroom. The man pays and goes into the bathroom, and abusively tries to undress Quentin, who defends as best as he can. Antoine leaves the place and returns afterwards, only to find his brother's backpack on the bathroom's floor. He is nowhere to be found and it's only then when Antoine realizes what he has done.

Relationships amongst brothers are always complicated, there is much love and hate, constant conflicts, but usually nothing escalates as dangerously as it happens in Pascal-Alex Vincent's film. Antoine has a ghastly nightmare: he sees Quentin covered in blood. He starts feeling guilty, and he starts remembering other occasions in which he had purposefully neglected his brother.

He has but one choice: to keep traveling to Spain. Just before reaching his mother's town, he runs into Angel, a young man that tries to help him (curiously, Angel is played by Fernando Ramallo, famous for his interpretation of a gay teenager in Krampack); finally he arrives on time for the memorial. It's only fitting that the possibility of the brother's death is bound to the mother's funeral. It all boils down to Lacan's symbolic death. The burial place is the first symbol in which humanity can reorganize itself. Animals live and die anonymously, so to speak. For humans, unity and irreplaceability must be protected and remembered through language, that's why we speak of the dead, why we erect monuments and place tombstones, thus creating what Lacan called "a second death" that pertains to the order of the symbolic.

The final scenes of "Donne-moi la main" are unforgettable because of the lack of communication, loneliness and true desperation that the director transmits with strong images. At the beginning of the film, we had two brothers trusting in each other, sharing their frustrations and joys, expressing their feelings not through conventional language but rather through gestures, physical contact, silences and movement. At the end of the film all that remains is bereft, loss, rage and violence.

tuve la suerte de que me tocara el plato más grande

Escribir guiones para “La buena vida” y “Recuerdos de cocina” (dos nuevos programas de Plus TV que empezarán a emitirse en pocas semanas) me ha demandado más tiempo del que había imaginado. Así que si antes iba a dos o tres inauguraciones por semana, ahora apenas tengo tiempo para ir a una sola. De hecho, también ya he pasado una semana completa sin ir a muestras (algo bastante inusual en mí). De todos modos, el viernes 1 de junio estuve en la inauguración de Poblaciones de Milena Golte en la galería barranquina Sala 58. Milena nos sorprende y nos deleita con una gran variedad de estilos y formatos, desde cuadros con un cierto toque impresionista, hasta figuras concebidas con la menor cantidad de trazos (el gato estilo carboncillo y gouache me viene a la mente); especialmente fascinantes son sus tablones de madera agujereados, en los que la artista ha pintado con minuciosidad a las insoportables polillas que invaden nuestras casas cada verano. Tuve la oportunidad de saludar a Milena y le comenté lo impresionado que había quedado con este trabajo en madera que, para mí, era como el retrato de una pesadilla (y lo digo porque de niño he perdido docenas de cómics por culpa de estos terribles bichos).
The Gathering

Me tomé un par de vodkas con jugo de naranja, y me quedé conversando con mi amiga Gabriela Gastelumendi. En el momento en el que llegó el whisky también llegaron mis amigos José Arturo Lugón y Adriana Bustamente. Ya he comentado extensamente la muestra de José Arturo en un post anterior, y muchos de los presentes le preguntaron qué tal había salido todo, entre ellos Virginia Fernández, la directora y dueña de Sala 58. Me pasé un largo rato conversando con José Arturo y Adriana, cuando me recordaron que me había perdido la muestra de Tola, yo les expliqué que lo de Plus TV me estaba demandando más tiempo de lo normal.

Y también aproveché para contarles que el sábado 26 de mayo almorcé con María Fe Celi y con Fabián Ramos Venturini, profesor y tutor de nuestro colegio. Fieles a nuestra tradición, cada año María Fe y yo almorzamos con Fabián, y recordamos las épocas del colegio, cuando nosotros éramos sus alumnos. Nos fuimos a La Plazita, en Miraflores. Nos hemos reído, como siempre, haciéndonos todo tipo de bromas. Y además hemos disfrutado de un delicioso almuerzo. Yo al menos violé mi dieta por completo comiendo anchovetas y aceitunas como entrada, osobucco con papardelle y un cheesecake de postre. Curiosamente, en el transcurso del almuerzo me encontré con Christian Fuchs, a quien hasta ahora solamente había visto en galerías como Lucía de la Puente o Corriente Alterna. Nos saludamos, conversamos un par de segundos y aproveché para presentarle a María Fe y a Fabián.

Por cierto, con una docena de cómics publicados, THE GATHERING parece estar ya consolidada como una publicación respetable. En sus páginas han colaborado autores conocidos como Gail Simone, Sterling Gates, John Jackson Miller y otros totalmente nuevos autores, como yo. Estoy especialmente entusiasmado por el tercer volumen dedicado al terror (allí tengo una historia de cuatro páginas que todos deberían leer). Los dejo con la portada, ¿no les encanta?

July films / Películas julio (2011)

Compared to other months, the amount of films in July was considerably lesser… I guess that’s what happens when I stop focusing on short films. Anyway, I did manage to find many interesting things. Let’s start with “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2” (2011) directed by David Yates, a film that had a profound emotional impact on me, as I commented on my previous post (go and read it now if you haven’t already); the all-star cast includes Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, etc. Another extraordinary movie, although completely different from the “boy who lived” saga, was “Scream 4” (2011); it’s hard to believe I saw Scream 1 fifteen years ago. Yes, director Wes Craven redefined the horror genre then and he does it again here. I don’t know if the nature of the world has become more perverse now than it was in the late 90s (for Jacques Lacan a perverse individual is the one who assumes the position of the object-instrument of the "will-to-enjoy" -volonté-de-jouissance- which is not his own will but that of the big Other), but let’s keep in mind that sometimes all that seems to matter to some people is the amount of Facebook friends or twitter followers they have, or how many hits do they vids get on YouTube. Quality is no longer relevant –if it ever was– but if in the past that wasn’t evident it is now: If the possibility of living in an openly perverse society –according to poststructuralist theories– isn’t horror then I don’t know what is.  


Other interesting films that tackle the subject of human depravity and unethical actions are Stephen Frears’ “Dangerous Liaisons” (1988) and Ingmar Bergman’s “The Serpent’s Egg” (1977). The first one deals with the plots and conspiracies within the nobility in France in the 18th century, adapting the novel of Choderlos de Laclos (which has been thoroughly analyzed by several literary critics). The second one takes a particularly interesting moment in history: 1930s Germany and the economic crisis. It is important to see the level of poverty and human misery that the German people had been suffering to understand the rise of Adolf Hitler. With the largest inflation in human history (apparently the second one would be the Peruvian debacle in the 80s), a couple must struggle to survive, and as they are completely desperate they have no other choice but to take part in an experiment done by scientists that could have perfectly embraced the Nazi approach.


In the same line, Vittorio De Sica’s “Ladri di biciclette” (1948) is a true classic of cinema. A father and his son must look for their stolen bicycle; without it the father will lose his job, and without his job the family could very well starve to death. Italy was going through serious financial problems after WWII and this masterpiece recreates the people’s despair. Eloy de la Iglesia’s “Navajeros” (1980) is based on the life of popular youth delinquent El Jaro, who has become a legendary figure by escaping from the cops all the time, until one night he is caught by a drugs dealer that plans to have him sodomized. Focused entirely on Spain’s outcasts, the movie succeeds by portraying the dead-end lives of young boys and their miserable urban background. 


The strenuous conflict between youngsters and the law can be exemplified in two films. In “Swing Kids” (1993), a group of teenagers defy the laws of a Nazi-ruled Germany by listening to swing music (deemed as Jewish-influenced music and therefore forbidden); Christian Bale and Robert Sean Leonard (Dr. Wilson from House MD) have stellar roles in this dramatic movie. On the other hand, Jacques Audiard’s “Un Prophète” (2009) begins with a young Arab’s first day in prison and his experiences: how he attempts to escape from those who would try to sexually abuse him, and how eventually he manages to become a powerful druglord. Intense and haunting, this is truly an unforgettable story.  

On the comedy front, this month I was glad to see Bill Murray, always a great actor, in “Caddyshack” (1980), a harmlessly fun, golf oriented flick; and “What About Bob?” (1991) a very amusing story about a patient absolutely obsessed with his shrink. My favorite Bill Murray’s film continues to be Lost in Translation which is highly ranked on my top 100 list, but his non-dramatic acting is delightful (for example, in Zombieland). 


David Lynch’s “Wild at Heart” (1990) might very well be one of the craziest love stories ever; taking the basic topics of romantic drama Lynch unravels them and reinvents them along with outbursts of violence in a world of criminals and persecution; the result is a very unique film, but then again, when it comes to Lynch everything is always about originality. “Unmade Beds” (2009) directed by Alexis Dos Santos shares a few traits with his first cinematographic project, Glue (you can read a review on it here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0484039/usercomments and if you consider it good enough please vote for it); a fatherless 20 year-old kid has embarked upon a journey, an existential journey if you will, exploring not only London but his own sexuality as well. The director takes an experimental and moody approach that works quite well for most of the movie. Centered on another young man devoid of fatherly figures, “HerzHaft” (2007) approaches a most delicate subject: the illegal sexual relationship between a 15 year-old high school student and his sports teacher. I also saw “Lucky Bastard” (2009) which was a bit of a letdown.


This has been quite a French month too. Christophe Honoré’s “Ma Mère” (2004) brings up one of the most discussed taboos in history: incest. In this case, a young man and his mother get so intimate after the father’s death that they eventually end up having sex with each other. This isn’t, however, a simple Oedipal cautionary tale as it’s based on Bataille’s literary work, Bataille is considered one of the most brilliant contemporary French authors, although he has been misunderstood by many; in his work sex and mysticism work together along several deconstruction theories. If only for that, for the bravery of cinematographically adapting Bataille’s novel, this is worth watching. Sexuality is also a fundamental aspect of Frank Guérin’s“Un Jour D’Eté” (2006), as two high school boys share intimate moments only to drift away before one of them dies accidentally (played by Théo Frilet, who is no strange to gay themed productions such as Weekend a la campagne and Plein Sud). The surviving teenager, riddled with guilt, must now try to cope with the loss of his best friend while at the same time accepting the fact that he might experience a strong sexual attraction towards another high school boy. 


For the past couple of months I’ve reviewed a number of Pascal-Alex Vincent’s short films. Now it’s turn to pay attention to his first full-length film “Donne-Moi La Main” (2008): Antoine and Quentin are twins. Relationships amongst brothers are always complicated, there is much love and hate, constant conflicts, but usually nothing escalates as dangerously as it happens in Donne-Moi La Main, perhaps the unspoken homosexuality of one of them acts as the catalyst of disaster. Cyril Legann’s “Chemin de Croix” (2008) takes place during a day, a particular day in which a teenage boy is kidnapped by a young criminal (played by Johan Libéreau, who has worked in other movies of gay interest such as "Les Témoins" and "Douches froides"). As the two of them spend the night together they develop a very unusual bond, and after a matter of hours they are already sleeping together. Finally, Olivier Ducastel & Jacques Martineau’s “Ma Vraie Vie à Rouen” (2002) is centered on a 16 year-old boy who loves to dance and skate on ice; he gets obsessed with filming himself and others on a daily basis, after posing naked in front of his camera and trying to convince his best friend to do the same, he soon realizes that there is a reason why he’s never been interested in girls. En comparación a otros meses, en julio no ha habido tantas películas (supongo que en parte se debe a haber dejado de lado los cortometrajes) aunque igual me las arreglé para ver algunas muy interesantes. Empecemos con Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 (2011) dirigida por David Yates, que me causó un gran impacto emocional, tal como comenté en el post anterior (si no lo han leído, háganlo ahora); el elenco es de primera:  Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, etc. Otro film extraordinario fue Scream 4 (2011), es difícil creer que ya han pasado quince años desde que vi Scream 1. Sí, el director Wes Craven redefinió el género de terror a fines de los 90s y ahora vuelve a lograrlo. No sé si la naturaleza del mundo es ahora más perversa que hace década y media (entendamos lo perverso tal como lo define Jacques Lacan: el perverso es el sujeto que asume la posición de instrumento de la voluntad de goce del otro -volonté-de-jouissance- anulando su propia voluntad en aras de un gran Otro), pero no debemos olvidar que a veces, para algunas personas, lo único que importa es la cantidad de amigos que tienen en Facebook o seguidores en twitter, o la cantidad de clicks que consiguen en sus videos de YouTube. La calidad ha dejado de ser relevante -si es que alguna vez lo fue- pero si antes esto no era evidente ahora sí lo es: Se me ocurren pocas cosas más terroríficas que la posibilidad real de vivir en una sociedad abiertamente perversa.


Otras cintas interesantes que manejan el tema de la depravación humana y las acciones no éticas son Dangerous Liaisons (1988) de Stephen Frears y The Serpent’s Egg (1977) de Ingmar Bergman. La primera narra las intrigas y conspiraciones al interior de la nobleza francesa en el siglo XVIII, adaptando la novela de Choderlos de Laclos (que ha sido exhaustivamente analizada por diversos críticos literarios). La segunda desarrolla un momento histórico particularmente interesante: la Alemania de 1930 y la crisis económica. Es importante entender el nivel de pobreza y miseria humana del pueblo alemán para comprender el ascenso de Adolf Hitler. Con la mayor inflación registrada en la historia (la segunda mayor la tuvimos aquí en Perú, en la década de los 80s), una pareja debe luchar para sobrevivir, y al estar completamente desesperados no tienen otra opción que participar en un experimento hecho por científicos que encajarían perfectamente con la mentalidad nazi.


En la misma línea, Ladri di biciclette (1948) de Vittorio De Sica es un verdadero clásico del cine. Un padre y su hijo deben buscar la bicicleta que les ha sido robada; sin ella, el padre perderá su trabajo y sin trabajo la familia moriría de hambre. Italia pasó por una gran depresión económica tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y esta obra maestra recrea la desesperanza de la gente. Navajeros (1980) de Eloy de la Iglesia se basa en la vida del popular delincuente juvenil El Jaro, que se ha convertido en una figura legendaria al escapar siempre de la policía, hasta que una noche un narcotraficante, con la intención de sodomizarlo, lo atrapa. Enfocada enteramente en los marginales de España, la película tiene éxito al retratar las vidas sin rumbo de los chavales y su miserable entorno urbano.


El conflicto entre los jóvenes y la ley encuentra lugar en otras dos producciones: En Swing Kids (1993), un grupo de adolescentes desafían las leyes de la Alemania nazi al escuchar música swing (tachada como producto judío y por tanto prohibida); memorables papeles de Christian Bale y Robert Sean Leonard (Dr. Wilson de la serie House). Por otro lado, Un Prophète (2009) de Jacques Audiard empieza con un joven árabe en su primer día en la cárcel: tendrá que aprender a escapar de aquellos que quieren abusar sexualmente de él, y terminará como un gran narcotraficante. Intensa y evocativa.


En cuanto a comedias, este mes me alegró ver a Bill Murray en Caddyshack (1980), diversión inofensiva; y What About Bob? (1991) una historia bastante chistosa de un paciente obsesionado con su psiquiatra. Murray tiene la cualidad de ser genial en dramas (Lost in Translation) y también en comedias o parodias (Zombieland).


Wild at Heart (1990) de David Lynch bien podría ser una de las más enloquecidas historias de amor; Lynch toma los tópicos habituales para desarmarlos y reinventarlos, y agrega estallidos de violencia en un mundo de criminales y persecución, la originalidad es la divisa de Lynch después de todo. Unmade Beds (2009) de Alexis Dos Santos guarda similitud con su primer proyecto Glue (pueden leer mi reseña aquí http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0484039/usercomments y también pueden votar por ella); un chico de 20 años, sin padre, se embarca en un viaje (un viaje existencial) y se dedica a explorar Londres y su propia sexualidad. Protagonizada por un alumno de secundaria, también sin padre, HerzHaft (2007) describe la ilícita relación sexual entre el menor y su profesor de deporte. También vi Lucky Bastard (2009), un poco decepcionante.


Este ha sido un mes bastante francés. Ma Mère (2004) de Christophe Honoré ahonda en uno de los tabús más explotados: el incesto. En este caso, un joven y su madre empiezan a tener relaciones sexuales tras la muerte del padre. Sin embargo, al estar basada en la obra literaria de Bataille esta no es una simple historia sobre el complejo de Edipo; Bataille es considerado uno de los más brillantes autores franceses contemporáneos, en su trabajo el sexo y el misticismo dialogan con la corriente teórica de la deconstrucción. La audacia de adaptar una novela de Bataille es razón suficiente para ver Ma Mère. La sexualidad también juega un papel fundamental en Un Jour D’Eté (2006) de Frank Guérin; dos muchachos de secundaria comparten momentos íntimos y terminan distanciándose poco antes que uno de ellos muera (interpretado por Théo Frilet, quien ha participado en producciones de temática gay como Weekend a la campagne y Plein Sud). Con sentimientos de culpa, el otro chico deberá aceptar la pérdida de su mejor amigo al mismo tiempo que experimenta una fuerte atracción sexual por otro joven.


En los últimos meses he revisado varios cortometrajes de Pascal-Alex Vincent. Ahora le llega el turno a su primer largometraje Donne-Moi La Main (2008): Antoine y Quentin son gemelos. Las relaciones entre hermanos a menudo son conflictivas, pero nunca tanto como en Donne-Moi La Main; tal vez la homosexualidad de uno de ellos actúa como catalizador del desastre. Finalmente, Ma Vraie Vie à Rouen (2002) de Olivier Ducastel & Jacques Martineau se centra en la vida de un chiquillo de 16 años que disfruta bailando y esquiando sobre hielo; se obsesiona con filmarse a sí mismo y a otras personas diariamente, luego de posar desnudo frente a la cámara y tratar de convencer a su mejor amigo para que haga lo mismo, pronto descubre que si nunca sintió atracción por las chicas es por una razón. Asesinos Delicados - Gabriel Alayza (Galería Forum)

Perhaps the best Pascal-Alex Vincent's short film to date, "Bebé Requin" neatly weaves three stories of teenage relationships and the lack of communication in postmodern society. And by postmodern we could understand 'fragmented', that yearns for the whole. Here such fragmentation is related directly to the advent of technology. In the first story, a boy and a girl sit together semi-naked whilst the boy entertains himself with online gaming (technology). The cries of death come from the game as a mumbled cacophony that fills the room. There is not a word spoken between them, and when the doorbell rings, they're forced to get dressed. A boy has come to visit them. And while he stares taciturnly into the screen, he seems to make a decision and "breaks the ice", so to speak.


The recently arrived boy removes his shirt, unzips his pants and walks towards the other boy, demanding to have his penis sucked. Of course, there is no reasonable reaction from either the girl or the boy. They continue to sit down, he continues to play and only ventures that the distraction is going to make him lose, even so he briefly practices fellatio on his friend, although the girl refuses to do the same. They are deeply concentrated on the screen, which is only mirroring the indifference of our time. But what does our era enjoin us to do? We must either survive through the simulacrum or succumb to the real, this foreclosure bequeaths us or sustains turning away from communication. When the girl refuses to provide pleasure to the boy, he hits them both with his skateboard. Once he's gone, we still see the boy and the girl, faces covered in blood, sitting on the couch, and he's still playing with the same feeling of boredom in his eyes.

The second story is a hyperbole of the lack of communication, as a teenager tries, day after day, to talk to another boy. He talks and talks and talks, and he never receives an answer; his interlocutor barely looks at him and keeps on walking. As philosopher Alan Badiou would explain, communication transmits a universe made up of disconnected images, remarks, statements and commentaries whose accepted principle is incoherence. And it's only through the incoherent ramblings of the lonely teenager that we understand the relevance of true rapport.

In the third story, the male body is the center of the narrative. Quoting Badiou: "We will call 'body' the worldly dimension of the subject and 'trace' that which, on the basis of the event, determines the active orientation of the body. A subject is therefore a formal synthesis between the statics of the body and its dynamics, between its composition and its effectuation". It's only fitting, then, to observe the body duplicated, in this case, in twin brothers that carry out different dynamics. After all, one of them is gladly involved in a sexual relationship with a girl, and subsequently the other one is furiously jealous. When one of the brothers hits the other in order to supplant him during the intercourse, it's made clear that the "active orientation of the body" can easily surmount the established boundaries.

Why is this short film a work of art? As Badiou would define it "Art is not the sublime descent of the infinite into the finite abjection of the body and sexuality. It is the production of an infinite subjective series through the finite means of a material subtraction". Pascal-Alex Vincent successfully blends subjectivity with sexuality and provides us with an honest insight into the heart of adolescence.

Aunque no pude estar el día de la inauguración de "Asesinos Delicados", sabía que debía ir a la muestra de Gabriel Alayza, actualmente en exposición en la Galería Forum (hasta este sábado). Como un apasionado del noveno arte, me fascina encontrar una propuesta como la de Alayza, que mezcla la libertad expresiva del cómic con personajes de inigualable originalidad; cada cuadro del artista es un manifiesto visual de gran osadía. Hay que tomarse un buen tiempo para ver y leer todo lo que se encuentra en la muestra, no solamente por la inmensa cantidad de cuadros –y hasta esculturas– del artista sino sobre todo por el gran cuidado y dedicación que está detrás de todos los trabajos seleccionados.

Me encontré con Gabriel Alayza el jueves pasado en la Galería Cecilia González y le prometí que iría a ver su muestra. He cumplido con mi palabra. A todos los que puedan, les recomiendo que se den una vuelta por Forum. No lo lamentarán.

Adicionalmente estoy incluyendo algunas viñetas de la historia que estoy dibujando para el volumen quinto de THE GATHERING.

Y, finalmente, recordando que la única vez que intenté hacer malfattis desde la masa no me quedaron muy bien, decidí pedirlos a la hora del almuerzo. Hasta ahora mi especialidad siguen siendo los ñoquis, y como le he prometido a mi amiga María Fe, apenas esté lista la mini-cosecha de camote de la casa –plantada al lado de la vereda– le prepararé ñoquis de camote.

Films (June) / Películas (junio)

So this month I saw 14 films and 19 short films. I’ll start commenting about one of my favorite directors, Gregg Araki, and his Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy formed by Totally F***ed Up (1993), The Doom Generation (1995) and Nowhere (1997). In The Doom Generation actor James Duval conveys all the confusion and insecurities of adolescence, a similar role to the one he plays in Nowhere, in both films, sexual confusion and identity issues are of paramount importance. Araki also directed one of my personal favorites: Mysterious Skin (2004), in which the repercussions of sexual abuse will affect the lives of two boys, but in so many different ways that one could almost wonder if they shared the same experience.

X-Men: First Class (2011) was a great surprise. At first I wasn’t really interested in it until I found out Nicholas Hoult was playing Beast. This young actor has always participated in interesting projects and X-Men was, indeed, a very solid and entertaining movie that creates a new continuity and background history for mutantkind (as a curiosity I would like to comment that Brendan Fehr, who played a male prostitute in “Sugar”, appears a few seconds as a navy officer). Bertolluci’s Ultimo tango a Parigi (1972), on the other hand, is a disgruntled and grim view on relationships, on sexual activities taken to the extreme and, ultimately, of failure; dramatic and strong, it shows what two people can do to each other.

The men who stare at goats (2009) a hilarious film about a secret division of the US Army trained to be “Jedi warriors”, using a pacifist approach and psychic abilities that no one believes in. Dear Pillow (2004): when a confused teenager starts hanging out with a veteran pornographer things change, not only every conversation they have revolves around sex but also the man seems very interested in the young boy. Lifeboat (1944) is a classic Alfred Hitchcock film that masterfully takes advantage of the settings: a group of survivors in a lifeboat struggle with the sea and against each other. A Single Man (2009): actor Colin Firth creates a most enthralling character, imbued by the sheer emotion of loss and yet adjusted to the repressed feelings he considers necessary to suppress even in his last day on Earth. After losing his partner and lover, there is no deterrence in his decision: he will kill himself at the end of the day. Unless one of his students, played by Nicholas Hoult, tries to stop him from committing suicide. But will they find love in the end or something else? Biutiful (2010) is a merciless portrayal of poverty and human misery in Spain.30 Days of Night: Dark Days (2010) was a very disappointing sequel of one of my favorite vampire movies. Spun (2002) chronicles the lives of drug addicts and drug dealers in a story fueled by black humor and exaggerated situations. Clash of the Titans (2010) was a bit of a let down, perhaps the only good thing about it is Nicholas Hoult’s presence. And finally, La confusion des genres (2000) is an interesting story about sexual confusion, bisexuality and homosexuality, firmly inserted in the French culture.

And now let’s move onto the short films. Brookton Hollow (2010) is narrated as a fairy tale, and has much of the magic and innocence of children’s stories, although here the protagonist is a gay teenager. Recruiting (2005) presents a very original concept that should be developed into a full length movie. Dear Friend (2011) is a neatly weaved story of teenage sexuality and acceptance.  Verona (2010) tells the story of Romeo and Juliet, except that Juliet is a male character. Bacchanal (2006) delves into the practices of the Dionysian cults.

Drowning (2009): a tender story about friendship and coming-out dynamics. Franswa Sharl: a lighthearted comedy in which a young boy enjoys dressing up as a girl. Tanjong Rhu gives us a glimpse on how homosexuality is punished in Asian countries. Teddy (2009): a bittersweet tale of lost love and longing. Love 100°C shares the intimate moments of a deaf kid and an adult man.  My Last Ten Hours with You (2007) manages to intensify the last moments that two lovers share. Ajumma! Are you krazy? a funny comedy on older women. A la ricercca di Tadzio is a documentary that follows Luchino Visconti through Europe as he searches for the actor that will play Tadzio in Morte a Venezia.

Other interesting works were Freunde that emphasizes in the confusing relationship between two German boys. Bébé Requin directed by Pascal-Alex Vincent, a lucid and personal interpretation of adolescence; in three short stories the French director explores sexual urges, loneliness and sexuality. Other French productions of interest were Miroirs d’ete that emphasizes the existential doubts in a teenager and his questions about sexual orientation. Basquet et Maths deals with the possibility of romance between two high school students. Les incroyables aventures de Fusion Man is a very funny take on gay superheroes. Omar is a story about exclusion and urban outcasts.

Finally, I would also recommend Everybody is having sex… but Ryan; Different; Billy’s dad is a fudge packer (simply hilarious); The Mountain King; Ron the Zookeeper; Crush; …Lost; The Confession; Same Sex America; Transient; Saint and Tá.

Empezaré comentando el trabajo de uno de mis directores favoritos, Gregg Araki, y su Trilogía del Apocalipsis Adolescente compuesta por Totally F***ed Up (1993), The Doom Generation (1995) and Nowhere (1997). Araki también dirigió Mysterious Skin (2004), una de mis preferidas. Aquí, las repercusiones del abuso sexual en dos chicos afectarán sus vidas para siempre, pero cada uno de ellos enfrenta el trauma de manera tan distinta que pareciera que no hubiesen pasado por la misma experiencia.

X-Men: First Class (2011) fue una grata sorpresa. Al inicio no tenía mucho interés en verla, pero al averiguar que Nicholas Hoult interpretaría a Beast empecé a estar interesado. Este joven actor ha participado siempre en proyectos interesantes y, en efecto, X-Men resultó ser una película sólida y entretenida que crea una nueva continuidad en la saga de los mutantes (como curiosidad, me llamó la atención ver a Brendan Fehr, que interpreta a un prostituto en Sugar, tan sólo un par de segundos en pantalla). Ultimo tango a Parigi (1972) de Bertolluci, por otro lado, es una desencantada y cruel visión sobre las relaciones, las actividades sexuales llevadas al extremo y, por último, el fracaso; fuerte y dramática, nos muestra lo que dos personas pueden hacerse entre sí.

Biutiful (2010) es un despiadado retrato de la pobreza y la miseria humana en España. 30 Days of Night: Dark Days (2010): pésima continuación de una de mis películas favoritas de vampiros. Spun (2002) registra la vida de drogadictos y vendedores de drogas en un relato impulsado por el humor negro y situaciones exageradas. Clash of the Titans (2010), es un tanto decepcionante, quizá lo único bueno de la película es la actuación de Nicholas Hoult. Y finalmente, La confusion des genres (2000) es una curiosa historia sobre confusión sexual, bisexualidad y homosexualidad, al amparo de las costumbres francesas.

Y ahora llegó el turno de los cortometrajes. Brookton Hollow (2010) es narrado como en un cuento de hades, y encierra mucho de la magia e inocencia de las historias infantiles, excepto que el protagonista es un adolescente gay. Recruiting (2005) presenta un concepto muy original que merece convertirse en película. Dear Friend (2011), honesta y bien desarrollada, se centra en la sexualidad juvenil y en la aceptación. Verona (2010) cuenta la historia de Romeo y Julieta, excepto que aquí Julieta es un personaje masculino. Bacchanal (2006) investiga las prácticas de los cultos dionisíacos.

Drowning (2009) es una tierna historia sobre la amistad y la revelación. Franswa Sharl, una comedia ligera sobre un chico que se divierta vistiéndose como chica. Tanjong Rhu nos da un vistazo a la forma en que la homosexualidad es castigada en ciertos países asiáticos. Teddy (2009) es un agridulce relato sobre el amor perdido y la añoranza. Love 100°C comparte los momentos íntimos de un chico sordo y un hombre adulto. My Last Ten Hours with You (2007) se las arregla para intensificar los últimos mementos que comparte una pareja. Ajumma! Are you krazy? simpática comedia sobre mujeres mayores. A la ricercca di Tadzio es el documental que sigue a Luchino Visconti a través de Europa cuando buscaba a un actor que interpretase a Tadzio en Morte a Venezia.

Otros cortometrajes interesantes fueron Freunde que enfatiza el aspecto confuso en la relación entre dos chicos alemanes. Bébé Requin dirigida por Pascal-Alex Vincent, es una lúcida y personal interpretación de la adolescencia; en tres historias breves el director francés explora la urgencia del sexo, la soledad y la sexualidad. Films (May) / Películas (mayo)

I didn’t have much time this month… So basically I only saw half a dozen films and, of course, a lot of short films. Let’s start with A Perfect Getaway (2009), a thriller with a very promising beginning but ultimately a bit of a forced ending. The Company of Wolves (1984) is a back to the basics approach on fairy tales, with a special emphasis on sexuality, rape and sexual awakening. Dorian Blues (2004) is a great comedy that follows the life of high school student Dorian and his conservative and traditional family.

The Cement Garden (1993) is a dramatic film based on Ian McEwan’s novel. Dark humor, decay and ominous moments find a most poetic expression thanks to director Andrew Birkin. Other films of interest were District 9 (2009), a very compelling sci-fi metaphor that should make us think of the apartheid and other discriminatory practices. El último verano de la Boyita (2009), is an interesting film from Argentina that deals with cross-dressing, transsexual characters and gender issues.

And now onto the short films: That thing we do (2003), is a Canadian production that confronts the life of a homosexual man with a young boy who is just starting to discover his own sexuality. Trevor (1994) tells the story of a young boy that doesn’t want to be labeled as gay, even though at times he displays a very effeminate behavior. Death in Venice, CA (1994) is a homage to the classic Visconti’s film (which I wrote a review on http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067445/usercomments?start=10) although it combines also elements from Lolita.

From Ireland comes Stand up – don’t stand for homophobic bullying (2011), a short but optimistic take on a very serious problem. Follow you follow me (1979) tells the story of best friends Peter and Joseph, two boys that go to the same high school and see each other often after class… until parental pressure puts the friendship on the brink of collapse. Clu Gulager’s A Day with the Boys (1969) is a fierce exploration of childhood amorality and unbridled violence; this is a strong, original short film that remains as powerful as it was after four decades.

Pascal-Alex Vincent’s Candy Boy (2007), a French animated film tackles on environmental issues and orphan boys. Twoyoungmen, UT (2009) expresses the need for male companionship (John Cameron Mitchell and Tom Kalin appear in the credits in the “thanks to” section). Blokes (2010), from Chile, is an extraordinary story about masturbatory fantasies, sexual awakening and prying mothers. David (2005) focuses on a young mute boy as he runs into an unemployed albeit horny Mexican man. Sweat (2008) is set in a bath house, and explores briefly the protagonist’s need for adventures.

Heiko (2008) is production from Portugal that dares to take bondage and fetishism to the ultimate conclusion. Postmortem (2004) deals with old romantic flames. Braedrabylta (2007), from Iceland, depicts a cold and devastating reality, devoid of any real passion or joy, in this setting, two professional wrestlers must decide what comes first: wrestling or love. Vandalen (2008) ventures into the world of graffiti and the complicated relationship between two graffiti artists.

Love (2008), from Sweden, is centered on a college student named Love: he feels ashamed of being a virgin at 22; at the same time, Sebastian, married with a woman, feels the need to circumnavigate his heterosexual position by engaging into homosexual intercourse. Shakespeare’s Sonnets is a take on college and the friendship between two students. Pascal-Alex Vincent’s En Colo (2010) shares an anecdotic episode: the first kiss; although in this case it’ll be a boy on boy kiss. Pascal-Alex Vincent also directs Far West (2003), examines family dynamics as a young gay lad visits his grandfather in a rural French town. Finally, Go Go Reject is a funny comedy about dancing and body types. I also saw other short films such as Twenty-Two, Lilo Wanders, All you can eat, The Toe Heel Polka and On Earth as it is in Heaven.

En todo mayo solamente he visto media docena de películas... y muchos cortometrajes. Así que empecemos con A Perfect Getaway (2009), producción con un inicio prometedor pero un final un tanto forzado. The Company of Wolves (1984) toma una conocida fábula infantil y la narra tal como fue escrita originalmente, haciendo especial énfasis en el despertar sexual de la protagonista y en la amenaza de violación. Dorian Blues (2004) es una ingeniosa comedia sobre la vida de un estudiante de secundaria y su conservadora y tradicional familia.

Otras películas interesantes fueron District 9 (2009) una impactante metáfora de ciencia ficción que nos hace reflexionar sobre el apartheid y otras prácticas discriminatorias. El último verano de la Boyita (2009) es una cinta argentina que maneja temas como el travestismo, la transexualidad y los problemas de género.

Y ahora vamos con los cortometrajes: That thing we do (2003) es una producción canadiense que reúne a un homosexual adulto y a un niño que empieza a descubrir su sexualidad. Trevor (1994) narra las experiencias de un chiquillo que no quiere ser etiquetado como gay, aunque sus gestos afeminados terminan por traicionarlo. Death in Venice, CA (1994) es un homenaje a la obra clásica de Visconti (pueden leer una reseña en http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067445/usercomments?start=10) aunque también combina elementos de Lolita.

Desde Irlanda llega Stand up – don’t stand for homophobic bullying (2011) una apuesta optimista para un serio problema actual. Follow you follow me (1979) resume la amistad entre Peter y Joseph, dos chicos de colegio que están juntos todo el tiempo hasta que sus padres deciden que no deben verse más.  A Day with the Boys (1969) de Clu Gulager es una feroz exploración de la amoralidad infantil y de la violencia sin límites: este original cortometraje, es tan impactante hoy como hace cuatro décadas.



Candy Boy (2007) de Pascal-Alex Vincent (animación francesa) dedica su atención a problemas ecológicos y a niños huérfanos. Twoyoungmen, UT (2009) expresa la necesidad de buscar compañía masculina (John Cameron Mitchell y Tom Kalin aparecen en los créditos). Blokes (2010), de Chile, es una extraordinaria historia sobre fantasías masturbatorias, despertar sexual y madres invasivas. David (2005) se enfoca en un chico mudo que conoce a un mexicano desempleado. Sweat (2008) explora la necesidad de aventuras del protagonista en un sauna.

Heiko (2008), cortometraje portugués, se a treve a llevar la dominación y el fetichismo hasta el extremo. Braedrabylta (2007) es una fría y devastadora mirada a la realidad de Islandia; dos luchadores profesionales deben decidir qué es más importante: la lucha libre o el amor libre. Vandalen (2008) se aventura en el mundo del graffiti y en la relación conflictiva entre dos grafiteros.

En Colo (2010) de Pascal-Alex Vincent presenta una anécdota sobre el primer beso, aunque aquí se trata de un beso entre dos chicos. Pascal-Alex Vincent también dirige Far West (2003), un relato sobre dinámicas familiares protagonizado por un adolescente gay que visita a su abuelo en un pueblo rural de Francia. Go Go Reject es una divertida comedia sobre baile. También vi otros cortometrajes como Twenty-Two, Lilo Wanders, All you can eat, The Toe Heel Polka y On Earth as it is in Heaven.
