2015 has been a very gratifying year for me. It started a little bit slow, and perhaps with more bad news than good ones. Sometimes it’s hard to deal with certain situations, and I must say the beginning of this year caught me completely off guard. Fortunately, I somehow managed to find the energy to start new projects.

In April 2015 I started putting together a new comic book with stories either written or drawn by me. I wanted to make sure the comic would be on ComiXology so I had to meet a tight deadline.

In November, Dawn of the Undead was already available for sale on ComiXology while I was proudly holding in my hands a printed version of the book.

So, just like I predicted in December 2014, this was a much better year for me. In fact, December was a particularly rewarding month. I finally completed my thesis and my dissertation went very well.

And if that isn’t reason enough to celebrate, I also won an important comic book award in an annual event organized by my own university.

Since I started this blog I have always showcased my own artwork but I have also analyzed the artistic proposals of Peruvian artists.

It gives me great pleasure to find such fascinating works this year so I’ve decided to make a selection of the best of 2015.

Best artist: Renzo Núñez Melgar Vega (REVE)

Best solo exhibit: José Luis Carranza

Best collective exhibit: Modern Love

Best new talent: José Gabriel Alegría Sabogal

Best artistic proposal: Iván Fernández-Dávila (“Expresionismos”)

Best retrospective: Mundo cuy: retrospectiva de Juan Acevedo - ICPNA

Best international art exhibit: David LaChapelle - Fotografías 1984-2013

As usual, this selection includes mostly Peruvian artists, however, in the international section you’ll find American photographer David LaChapelle. Unlike previous years, this time I’m not including anything from MATE (Mario Testino Foundation), although I did go there a few weeks ago and I was once again very impressed with its photography collection.

In my next post you’ll discover the finest authors and best comic books of 2015. Yes, it’s the fifth edition of the famous and prestigious AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards). It’s always a lot of fun to do this list, and I hope it will inspire all of you to do similar lists (of course, you’re more than welcome to post them in the comments section).

Once the AAA is done, the year will be officially over (and I’ll be off for a few days, enjoying my well-deserved vacations). Stay tuned, my friends. And don’t forget to leave as many comments as you want.

Mejor artista: Renzo Núñez Melgar Vega (REVE)

Mejor muestra individual: José Luis Carranza

Mejor muestra colectiva: Modern Love

Dawn of the Undead available now on ComiXology

Dawn of the Undead is finally here! A comic book especially designed to satisfy even the most demanding readers. Putting this book together has been such an amazing experience. I started this project in April, when Irapuan Luiz sent me the penciled pages of the second chapter of Dawn of the Undead. I needed an inker and I began a selection process that took me entire weeks, I must have interviewed approximately 30 or 35 inkers, from places as varied as Austria, Spain, Russia, Mexico, Chile and the United States. Finally, I chose the American inker Mike Lawler, who did a terrific job and in record time! Simultaneously I got in touch with my friend and longtime collaborator Juan Alarcón, who drew the greatest cover ever, and who also submitted the gorgeous pages of The Old System, a story we created back in 2011 and that had been on standby until now.

My next task was to find colorists, so again I conducted a selection process that would turn out to be quite fruitful: Alberto Aguado, Christian Castellanos, César Hernández-Meraz and Alex Segura B. did an impressive job. Finally, and running against the clock, Alberto Aguado and Jude Terror helped me out with the lettering (and since deadlines were so tight, I actually had to do some lettering myself). Juggling dozens of emails each day and coordinating with creators from different continents (and therefore different time zones) was hard enough, but let’s add to that the fact that during those months I was also writing my thesis (my dissertation will be on December 14th, so all the hard work paid off!), and you can imagine I had way more than a full plate…

It was a pleasure to work with writers such as Chris Lewis, Jason Snyder, Dylan Faraday and Aaron Beepat. I can’t thank them enough. Without them, this book would have been considerably thinner. And having artist Adrián Gutiérrez illustrating one of my stories was a very good experience, and one I hope to repeat soon.

Of course this project wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity and unwavering support Kenny Smith, who was also responsible for the successful completion of Un-American Chronicles (available now on Comixology: https://www.comixology.com/Un-American-Chronicles-1/digital-comic/95418)
