Conan the Barbarian # 22 - Roy Thomas & Barry Windsor-Smith

“A westling wind curls listlessly thru the streets and alleys of the city called Pah-Dishah, some three weeks’ ride from Turan-besieged Makkalet” are the first words of The Shadow of the Vulture (January/February 1973).

Prince Yezdigerd wants Conan dead, after all, the barbarian disfigured his face. The Cimmerian, however, is a powerful adversary, and so Yezdigerd hires the most ruthless killer of Hyrkania, the mysterious Vulture, who has never lost a battle. The Vulture might be good with the sword, but eventually he proves to be no match for Conan.

This issue also marks the historical first appearance of Red Sonja, the She-Devil with a sword. As Roy Thomas had mentioned in a few interviews, the greatest romantic interests in Conan’s life were Belit and Valeria, one with black hair and other blonde and pale. So Thomas decided that it would be good to introduce a new character, a red-haired warrior, a woman who could defeat anyone on the battlefield. As she saves Conan’s life, it’s clear for the readers that something else will happen between them.

But let’s talk about the art. When I saw the splash page I was in awe. We have the black-maned barbarian fighting against a group of soldiers, right in front of the gates of the palace. This is a true example of great art. First of all, we have every possible detail right in front of us, the corpses of those who have fought against Conan, the vibrant movement of the soldiers that are still trying to restrain him. The lines and the cross hatching is flawless, only a few contemporary artists are able to achieve such level of perfectionism (Gene Ha, George Pérez or Phil Jimenez). There are over twenty citizens in the background staring at the brawl, we can recognize their attitudes and see facial gestures. Nonetheless, the true talent of Barry Windsor-Smith is made evident in his amazing control over perspective.

We could see this plash page as a full frame portraying the wrath of Conan. Nonetheless, we should note that it combines a number of techniques that only expert filmmakers are familiar with. First, we have a Dutch angle, which means the line of the horizon is slightly tilted and this creates a sensation of imbalance, as if Conan were about to fall on us at any second. Then we have a high-angled shot that let us see the city below and behind the barbarian. Now, in order to convey all the visual landmarks of Pah-Dishah that Barry has included in this wonderful page, he establishes a forced perspective, a technique used by immortal artists like Albrecht Dürer or architects like André Le Nôtre, a forced perspective gives us the illusion of greater depth.

The cover is also a fine example of Barry’s style. It is slightly reminiscent of an engraving work, but at the same time captures the dynamism and adventure of a comic book. The first appearance of Red Sonja is also quite memorable.

El príncipe Yezdigerd quiere matar a Conan, después de todo, el bárbaro desfiguró su rostro. El cimerio, no obstante, es un poderoso adversario, así que Yezdigerd contrata al más despiadado asesino de Hyrkania, el misterioso Buitre, que nunca ha perdido una batalla. El Buitre puede ser bueno con la espada, pero al final no será rival para Conan.

Este ejemplar también marca la primera aparición histórica de Red Sonja, la diablesa de la espada. Como mencionó Roy Thomas en una entrevista, los grandes intereses románticos de la vida de Conan eran Belit y Valeria, una de pelo negro y la otra rubia y pálida. Así que Thomas decidió que sería bueno presentar un nuevo personaje, una guerrera pelirroja, una mujer que podría derrotar a cualquiera en el campo de batalla. Cuando le salva la vida a Conan, es claro para los lectores que algo más sucederá entre ellos.

Pero hablemos sobre el arte. Cuando vi la primera página quedé impactado. Tenemos al bárbaro de melena negra peleando contra un grupo de soldados justo frente a las puertas del palacio. Este es un verdadero ejemplo de arte genial. Primero, tenemos cada detalle posible, los cadáveres de aquellos que lucharon contra Conan, el vibrante movimiento de los soldados que aún intentan frenarlo. Las líneas y la trama de tinta es impecable, sólo unos pocos artistas contemporáneos son capaces de tal nivel de perfeccionismo (Gene Ha, George Pérez o Phil Jimenez). Hay cerca de veinte ciudadanos que miran la confrontación, podemos reconocer sus actitudes y ver los gestos faciales. Sin embargo, el verdadero talento de Barry Windsor-Smith se hace evidente con su asombroso dominio de la perspectiva.

Podríamos ver esta página como una toma de cuerpo completo que retrata la ira de Conan. No obstante, deberíamos notar que combina técnicas que sólo cineastas experimentados manejarían con familiaridad. Primero, tenemos un ángulo holandés, en el que la línea del horizonte se inclina ligeramente, creando una sensación de desequilibrio, como si Conan fuese a caer encima de nosotros. Luego, tenemos una toma de ángulo elevado que nos deja ver la ciudad debajo y detrás del bárbaro. Ahora, para ilustrar todos los monumentos de Pah-Dishah, Barry establece una perspectiva forzada, una técnica usada por artistas inmortales como Durero o arquitectos como André Le Nôtre, una perspectiva forzada nos da la ilusión de una mayor profundidad.

La portada es también un gran ejemplo del estilo de Barry. Nos remite levemente a un trabajo de grabado, pero al mismo tiempo captura el dinamismo y la aventura de un cómic. La primera aparición de Red Sonja es también bastante memorable.

  3. Roy Thomas should be the only guy in comics,writing Conan-because all else is pure shit Dark Horse.Read this,Richard Stradley because its true.Stuff your REH purist bs up your ass,because that all ended with bullet through big bob howards head.

    1. In recent years I've been quite disappointed in Dark Horse's new Conan material. In fact I chose their Conan # 1 from last year as one of the worst new titles of 2012.

      However, Kurt Busiek did a very good job with the title a few years ago. But his artists were not even close to Barry Windsor-Smith or John Buscema.
